Can you eat healthy at McDonald's?

McDonald's Under 400 Calories Menu
I have a confession, I went to McDonald's yesterday! Shameful I know... But the truth is, we all go there at some point.  Now it's been a while and it seems what I saw there, although new and shocking to me, is not all that new to the rest of the world. I walk up to the counter to order and right in front of me was, "wait, what is that?" calorie details of selected menu items. It seems while I've been out of the country and avoiding the TV, McDonald's has kicked off a new "Under 400 Calories Marketing Campaign". I'm not really surprised. They've been trying to market their food as healthy for years now.  If you notice most of their newer commercials are about their salads and smoothies and the new and improved "healthy" happy meal!

So, does this new marketing campaign work? Can you eat your favorite things at McDonald's for under 400 calories?

My favorite thing at McDonald's is a cheeseburger happy meal, with no ketchup.  Oh, but that's not on the new Under 400 Calories menu.  According to their site my happy meal is 510 calories without the ketchup. Now, if I leave off the milk and apples I can get it down to 390 calories.  But that does not change the fact that the burger and fries are fried, contain 17 grams of fat, 40 mg of cholesterol, 790 mg of sodium, and 46 g of carbs, nor does it make me feel less guilty, which I believe is the hope of McDonald's.  "If healthy people can feel less guilty about our food, they'll continue to eat here."

This is not a rant about how horrible McDonald's is. I go there, I take my grand-kids there. I don't dislike them and I don't think they are the reason so many American's are overweight. I do believe they want to get in on the $500 billion "wellness revolution".

So, can you eat healthy at McDonald's?

Yes, but not necessarily just by choosing from their new Under 400 Calories menu.  Choose a salad, leave off the bacon, cheese and croutons and limit the dressing.  It won't be as healthy as the salad you make at home, but it'll be the better choice at McDonald's.

What do you think of this Under 400 Calories campaign? Has it already tricked you or did you see right through it?

Is apple juice safe?

Yesterday, Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Columbia University thoracic surgeon who gained fame and notoriaty first through books and the Oprah Show and even more so with his own show, The Dr. Oz Show, reported on a special investigative study that found unhealthy levels of arsenic in common brands of apple juice.  Anyone in range of any form of media is probably already aware of the huge controversy this has started between him and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

In an article released on the FDA's Consumer Update page, Donald Zink, Ph.D, senior science advisor at FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), explains that arsenic occurs naturally in the environment (organic) or as a result of contamination from human activity (inorganic).  He says it is found in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms and a small amounts of arsenic can be found in certain food and beverage products—including fruit juices and juice concentrates.  He continues on to say "there is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices. And FDA has been testing them for years."

The point being made by the Dr. Oz segment was that some of the juices tested had higher levels of arsenic than the FDA allowable levels for drinking water and that there are currently no defined "unsafe" levels of arsenic in juices by the FDA.

Neither side disputes that there is aresenic in the apple juice, so how does it get there? Patty Lovera,
Assistant Director of Food & Water Watch, says,  "One way for arsenic to make it into apple juice is through the use of arsenic-based pesticides in orchards, another is if water added to juice concentrate contains the chemical."

How does the consumer know who to trust?  This is a difficult question to answer. The public needs to realize that these issues can get very political and can be used by the media  for sensationalism.  Both sides have invested interests in this debate.  It's best to be aware of the issues and study them independently before jumping on either bandwagon.

What can be done to prevent the consumption of dangerous chemicals in foods?
1. Read Labels - Know what is in the product, know where it came from. Try to purchase foods grown in the United States.
2. Go Organic - Organic foods are required to meet stricter standards relative to how they are grown, handled and processed. Become aware of the marketing and labeling requirements for organic products.

Quetions or comments, please weigh in on the "Who do you trust?" conversation going on on the Renewed You Now Facebook page.

Muffin tops, bra bulge, bat wings...

... no more!

This was a fun and fit weekend for me. Friday night Jason and I went for a short run, maybe a mile. Now when I say run, I mean I ran some of the way and walked really fast the rest of the way, alternating between the two. It got dark before we were out of energy, so we finally connected the Wii Fit I got for Christmas.

I spent over an hour on the Wii Fit, while Jason mostly watched and laughed. It was a lot of fun. While my weight and BMI are "ideal", my original Wii Fit age was in the 50's! This goes to prove even more so that being a size 4 doesn't make you fit or in shape!

While it was not as intense of a workout as I might like, I added some exercises from a recent boot camp training we did with the Biggest Loser group and felt like I had a fair workout. We played it with our daughters and grandson on Saturday and it was fun for the whole family!

I ran about 3 miles Saturday with Jason and our youngest daughter, again that's walking and running, out of 40 minutes, I actually ran 14. I have no way to judge whether that's good or bad, but something is always better than nothing, right? Right!

My overall fitness goals are to do the Princess Half Marathon with a group of friends next year at Disney and to have no jiggling parts!

So, back to the title! I found this video this morning and thought I'd share it with you since we are fast approaching swimsuit season! If you look around, you can see that most of us suffer from one if not all of these - muffin tops, bra bulge, bat wings - for me its the bat wings, but they will be gone before long! Take some notes from this video and especially notice that she says 5-10 minutes each morning can make a difference! But remember, exercise is like pretty much everything else in life, you only get out of it what you put into it!!

Give me a K...

...he's strong to the finich cause he eats his spinach

Last week I told you about Vitamin D, D3 to be specific. Since then I've learned that a Health Claim has been filed with the FDA for Vitamin D. Now that may sound scary, but what it actually means is that since there have been certain scientific evidence that allows producers to make specific claims about the benefit of the product.

This week I want to share with you what I've learned about Vitamin K. This is the 2nd of the 8 ingredients that make up the new, most advanced wellness product available in the United States today, 8Rx. Most people talk about Vitamin K if they have used or know someone who uses Coumadin, an anticoagulant drug that works by inhibiting the body's blood clotting process. But it does more than just help the blood clot. Look here at the benefits:

• Helps prevent osteoporosis
• Helps reduce risk of cardiovascular disease
• Helps fight cancer
• Helps maintain healthy blood clotting
• Helps prevent excessive bleeding and hemorrhaging
• Cofactor in helping to prevent atherosclerosis of arteries
• Cofactor in bone metabolism by acting synergistically with Vitamin A & D

Vitamin K deficiencies are evident if you have symptoms related to problematic blood clotting or bleeding, like heavy menstrual bleeding, gum bleeding, bleeding within the digestive tract, nose bleeding, easy bruising, blood in the urine, prolonged clotting times, hemorrhaging, and anemia. Bone related symptoms can include loss of bone (osteopenia), decrease in bone mineral density (osteoporosis), and fractures-including common age-related fractures like that of the hips. Another set of vitamin K deficiency-related symptoms involves excess calcium in soft tissues like hardening of the arteries or calcium-related problems with heart valve function.

People with digestive issues tend to be prone to a Vitamin K deficiency. Particularly those with inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, short bowel syndrome, and digestive tract surgeries (like intestinal resection), or problems with pancreatic function, liver function, or gallbladder function.

Vitamin K can be obtained naturally from spinach, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, green beans, asparagus, broccoli, kale and mustard greens, green peas and carrots.

I also read that Vitamin K may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of the following health conditions:

* Bone fracture
* Chronic liver disease
* Cystic fibrosis
* Inflammatory bowel disease
* Liver cancer
* Pancreatic cancer
* Kidney stones
* Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
* Thrombosis

The new 8Rx formula contains a synergistic blend of Vitamin D3, Vitamin K, DHA (Omega 3 - Fish Oil), Olive Leaf Extract/Sesame Lignans, 2-AEP Calcium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Turmeric Powder/Piperine, and Green Tea that is unavailable in any other single supplement. There are over 1500 clinical studies published proving the health benefits of these ingredients supporting that they may help reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Stay tuned for more info on the benefits of these all-natural components!

Pour some sugar...

... on me

Nutrition and wellness is getting a lot of attention lately!

First, Kate Moss's addiction to wellness and her $1 million gym!

Yesterday the U.S. government issued new dietary guidelines. 112 pages of them, now who's going to read that? Maybe some of you who are always fussing about insomnia on Facebook. I found the 4-page Executive Summary a more realistic read. Basically it says, eat less salt, sugar, pizza and dessert and more fruits and vegetables!

Additionally, over the next few weeks, New York City will post this ad in subways and around town:

and running this commercial!

What do you think about that?

High heels...

...and hamstrings

If you follow me at all on Facebook, you know a few things about me lately.

1. All of my children and 1 of my grandchildren have had birthdays in the last 13 days.

2. My Christmas tree is still up (with the lights turned on).

3. I can't touch my toes.

After polling my FB friends, to find out that the many of them can indeed touch their toes without bending their knees, I started feeling pretty bad. Wondering why I can't if they can...

Well it came to me Tuesday morning when I put on my 3 inch heels and trotted out the door for work. "Maybe wearing heels 75% of the time is having and adverse affect on my muscles."

So of course I decided to do some research and this is what I found:

"Your lower extremity muscles shorten over the years due to repetitive usage and fatigue. They also shorten rapidly due to positional usage, such as wearing high heels.Your calf muscles, hamstrings, and hip flexors all shorten as a result of wearing high heels. This results in an anteriorly rotated pelvis and a lumber spine that is pulled into lordosis (increased spinal curvature). A proper stretching routine is essential to offset the results of wearing high heels."

"In order to help lengthen your hamstrings you can perform an exercise that is often used by horse riders to improve their abilities in dressage.

Stand on a step or staircase and use a handrail for support. Bring your feet back so that your heels over hang the step and you are standing on your toes and the pads behind your toes. Your foot will be half on and half off the step. Now allow your heels to drop downwards by a centimeter or two so that they are lower than the level of the step. You will feel the stretch down the backs of your legs. It is important that you don’t either perform this for too long or so extremely that you damage your tendons. Start off by doing it for a few seconds or so, and increase slowly to 1 minute, then up to 5-10 minutes per day.

Be gentle and only increase the stretch if you can do so comfortably. If you feel any pain or discomfort you must stop immediately. Seek advice from a doctor or physiotherapist if you are in any doubt about doing this exercise. Over time it is likely that you will find your hamstrings are lengthening and this will help you maintain more upright poise."

I discovered that I could not do this my first day in Yoga. I started Yoga because I read that it can help with neck and back pain and boy does it ever! I highly recommend it! As a matter of fact, I dare you to try it if you never have! I bet you'll find that it is not what you expected!

Can you touch your toes?

24,746 things on my to-do list...

...for 2011

In the spirit of "making a list", I thought I'd get a head start on the annual tradition of New Year's resolutions. But instead of dwelling on what I'm not doing well, I thought I'd make a list of all the things I could do to be a better me in 2011. While 24,746 things may seem like a lot, once you read the list I think you'll get that its not going to be too overwhelming! ;)

I guess you could say I'm resolving to take more time for myself, my husband, my family and my community. I have other things I want to focus on too, but this is the fun stuff!

1 5k
4 facials
4 trips to the beach
12 bottles of wine
12 girls days out
12 haircuts
12 massages
12 new outfits
15 pedicures and manicures
26 family nights
52 date nights
52 memory verses
52 yoga classes
52 Zumba classes
156 workouts
200 bare-feet covered
300 meals for strangers
365 hours alone with God
23,360 ounces of water

Just to clarify, these are all minimums! As far as this list is concerned, 'more is more'! ;) Don't worry I will be setting some limits for myself in other areas!

Pop a Squat...

...in public.

Today is World Toilet Day! I learned of this in an email I received this morning. So, I started doing a little research.

Here's what I've learned:

Having traveled to some remote areas of Honduras a couple of times, I have experienced less than desirable accommodations, recognizing that we take "modern" convenience for granted. Even doing so, I never considered what it might be like to live in an environment with absolutely no sanitation. I think this spoke to me even more than my own experience in Honduras:

"modesty forces women to poop in the fields before sunrise, or to hold it until after the sun sets. Imagine if you weren't allowed to relieve yourself during daylight hours, no matter how bad you wanted to go! What's more, many cases of rape occur in these dark and deserted areas."

I just can't begin to imagine. So, when you flush today, do so with gratitude and thanksgiving and say a prayer for those with no place to poo...

Oh, and go here for details on squatting in public!

Put some clothes on...

... your neighbor.

I want to introduce you to your new neighbor, my friend, James.

Maybe you met James when he was hanging around with us earlier in the year. Maybe you have no idea who or what I'm talking about and you're thinking, I've never seen this guy and he certainly doesn't live next door to me.

The truth is, he doesn't live anywhere. He's a ... "vagabond", "vagrant", "wanderer"... well not exactly. All of these terms by definition indicate that he'd have no purpose or direction in his travels. But for my friend James, this is a choice, and if you talk to him, you'll quickly find out that he doesn't classify himself as anything more than "a follower of Jesus". I'll let you read his story for yourself, I believe you will find it rather inspiring!

What I will tell you about James is that he is the founder of Clothe Your Neighbor as Yourself. At the foundation of what he does, he sells t-shirts and with the profits, he lives among and provides for our neighbors.

This organization is giving you a chance to kill two birds with one stone in this "season of giving". Here's what I mean:

1. You have a list of people who you want to give something for Christmas

2. You want to be in category 3 and "give back"

When you purchase one of these shirts for that special some one on your list, your new neighbor, James is going to take care of #2 and put you in category 3!

And thus, you will have JOY and LIVE LONGER as a result!

I'll be putting my order in and marking some names off of my list today! I hope you will do the same.

Be sure to check out the CYNY website and to follow them on Facebook and Twitter to travel along with your new neighbor, James.

"..So he asked him, "Which is the most important of all the commandments?" Jesus answered, "Here is the most important one. Moses said, 'Israel, listen to me. The Lord is our God. The Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind and with all your strength.'—(Deuteronomy 6:4,5) And here is the second one. 'Love your neighbor as you love yourself.'—(Leviticus 19:18) There is no commandment more important than these." -- Mark 12:28-31

Get in Category 3...

...give!

Unless you are cut off from all forms of media, (and if you're reading this, I know you're not) you are probably in one of the following two categories:

1. Super excited that Christmas is coming, making your list, shopping, putting up your tree, planning Christmas Eve with your family, pulling out your Christmas CD collection, driving those in the next category insane!!

2. Super agitated that Thanksgiving isn't even here yet and we're already talking about Christmas, I mean Halloween wasn't over before the store had out the Christmas decor and now there are pre-Black Friday sales, c'mon!

Well, I'm here to form a third category for you!

3. Hallelujah! Christmas is coming and I am living in abundance because the Lord sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for my sins! I have more than I need and I am super excited to give back this year at Christmas!

Now, I know there are some of you out there who want to be in category 3, but don't know where to start in the "giving back". Maybe you just don't know of anyone in need or don't "trust" charitable organizations. You know, I actually have people who come to me during the holidays and ask if I know of a charity or organization they can give to at this time of year, even those who do not recognize the true meaning of Christmas (you know the part about "I am living in abundance because the Lord sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for my sins!").

Well, I'm here to help! Over the next several weeks, I intend to introduce you to some ministries and some people who I know and love who are serving others in a real and tangible way!

An article I recent read by Drs. Oz and Roizen over at Success Magazine has this to say about helping other:

Almost every study of longevity indicates one secret that makes people healthier and happier: helping others. Some research shows a 60 percent decrease in mortality figures among those who help others; they’re aided by what’s called the “helper’s high.” Specifically, it’s the dignity, the joy, the passion and the purpose of helping others that have these beneficial effects, whether you’re helping another person quit smoking, building a home for a family in need or mentoring a child at school.

So, if you want to find JOY in the season of giving and LIVE LONGER, stay tuned!

Let's Get Physical...

...listen to your body talk!

The physical dimension of wellness provides almost immediate beneficial results-both physical and psychological.

It’s easy to see how the condition of our bodies can have such a profound effect on our overall health.

What is your physical condition? Are you receiving good nutrition, drinking plenty of water, getting regular exercise and maintaining the appropriate weight for your height?

Steps For Improving Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is the ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self management, attitude, and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals. A wise person once said, "Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness." Physical wellness can be maintained by applying the knowledge and skills of sound nutrition, exercise, and safety to everyday life.

  • Exercise three times a week, 20-30 minutes per session
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, and walk whenever possible
  • Get consistent and adequate sleep
  • Use seat belts and helmets, and encourage others to do so
  • Learn to recognize early signs of illness
  • Listen to your body
  • Practice safe sex
  • Eat breakfast - it's the most important meal of the day
  • Eat a variety of healthy foods
  • Stop smoking and protect yourself against second-hand smoke
  • Control your meal portions and try to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day
  • Use sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol in moderation

Physical Wellness Assessment

The physical dimension of wellness involves encouraging regular activities that produce endurance, flexibility and strength. Read each statement carefully and respond honestly by using the following scoring:

Almost always = 2 points -- Sometimes/occasionally = 1 point -- Very seldom = 0 points

_____ 1. I exercise aerobically (vigorous, continuous) for 20 to 30 minutes at least three times per week.

_____ 2. I eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains every day.

_____ 3. I avoid tobacco products.

_____ 4. I wear a seat belt while riding in and driving a car.

_____ 5. I deliberately minimize my intake of cholesterol, dietary fats, and oils.

_____ 6. I avoid drinking alcoholic beverages or I consume no more than one drink per day.

_____ 7. I get an adequate amount of sleep.

_____ 8. I have adequate coping mechanisms for dealing with stress.

_____ 9. I maintain a regular schedule of immunizations, physicals, dental checkups and self-exams.

_____ 10. I maintain a reasonable weight, avoiding extremes of overweight and underweight.

_______ Total for Physical Wellness Dimension

Score: 15 to 20 Points - Excellent strength in this dimension.

Score: 9 to 14 Points - There is room for improvement. Look again at the items in which you scored 1 or 0. What changes can you make to improve your score?

Score: 0 to 8 Points - This dimension needs a lot of work. Look again at this dimension and challenge yourself to begin making small steps toward growth here. Remember: The goal is balanced wellness. If you scored in this area, consider contacting us for a free consultation.

I scored a 17 with my lowest scores on #1, #7, & #8. What was your score? Post it in the comments below.

What is Wellness?

Wellness according to Webster.com: "\ˈwel-nəs\ n. the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal"

Often you may think the concept of wellness only applies to the physical being, but I believe there are multiple dimensions to complete wellness.

  • Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices towards living a more healthy and fulfilling life.
  • It is a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life.
  • Wellness is an alternative to dependency on doctors and drugs, to complacency, to mediocrity and to self-pity, boredom and slothfulness.
Let's look at the things that make up complete wellness:

  • Mental - emotional and intellectual development
  • Physical - the health of your body
  • Financial - stewardship of your resources
  • Spiritual - connection with God
  • Career - fulfilling and purposeful work
  • Social - ease in social situations
  • Family - harmony in your home

  • Use this worksheet to evaluate your current over wellness and check back often as we dig deeper into being "well"!

    I'm so sorry....
