Let's Get Physical...

...listen to your body talk!

The physical dimension of wellness provides almost immediate beneficial results-both physical and psychological.

It’s easy to see how the condition of our bodies can have such a profound effect on our overall health.

What is your physical condition? Are you receiving good nutrition, drinking plenty of water, getting regular exercise and maintaining the appropriate weight for your height?

Steps For Improving Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is the ability to apply your knowledge, motivation, commitment, behavior, self management, attitude, and skills toward achieving your personal fitness and health goals. A wise person once said, "Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness." Physical wellness can be maintained by applying the knowledge and skills of sound nutrition, exercise, and safety to everyday life.

  • Exercise three times a week, 20-30 minutes per session
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, and walk whenever possible
  • Get consistent and adequate sleep
  • Use seat belts and helmets, and encourage others to do so
  • Learn to recognize early signs of illness
  • Listen to your body
  • Practice safe sex
  • Eat breakfast - it's the most important meal of the day
  • Eat a variety of healthy foods
  • Stop smoking and protect yourself against second-hand smoke
  • Control your meal portions and try to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day
  • Use sugar, salt, fat, and alcohol in moderation

Physical Wellness Assessment

The physical dimension of wellness involves encouraging regular activities that produce endurance, flexibility and strength. Read each statement carefully and respond honestly by using the following scoring:

Almost always = 2 points -- Sometimes/occasionally = 1 point -- Very seldom = 0 points

_____ 1. I exercise aerobically (vigorous, continuous) for 20 to 30 minutes at least three times per week.

_____ 2. I eat fruits, vegetables, and whole grains every day.

_____ 3. I avoid tobacco products.

_____ 4. I wear a seat belt while riding in and driving a car.

_____ 5. I deliberately minimize my intake of cholesterol, dietary fats, and oils.

_____ 6. I avoid drinking alcoholic beverages or I consume no more than one drink per day.

_____ 7. I get an adequate amount of sleep.

_____ 8. I have adequate coping mechanisms for dealing with stress.

_____ 9. I maintain a regular schedule of immunizations, physicals, dental checkups and self-exams.

_____ 10. I maintain a reasonable weight, avoiding extremes of overweight and underweight.

_______ Total for Physical Wellness Dimension

Score: 15 to 20 Points - Excellent strength in this dimension.

Score: 9 to 14 Points - There is room for improvement. Look again at the items in which you scored 1 or 0. What changes can you make to improve your score?

Score: 0 to 8 Points - This dimension needs a lot of work. Look again at this dimension and challenge yourself to begin making small steps toward growth here. Remember: The goal is balanced wellness. If you scored in this area, consider contacting us for a free consultation.

I scored a 17 with my lowest scores on #1, #7, & #8. What was your score? Post it in the comments below.

The Cost of Prevention...

..."Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much," -- Luke 16:10

On our weekly corporate Business Overview conference call, Staci Wallace mentioned that with the passing of the new health care reform, many doctor's offices are turning to "wellness" as a solution. Finally!! we are looking at prevention over prescriptions!

Often when I talk to people about wellness, weight loss and preventing disease using our all natural products, one of the first questions that comes up is "How much does it cost?".

I want us to look at the cost relative to other programs as well as relative to what the alternative can cost.

The likelihood of contracting heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues can be directly impacted by the choices we make every day. What we eat or drink, what we don't eat, our level of mobility, the medications we take, smoking, drinking, our stress levels... you get the idea.

The costs associated with preventable chronic issues are staggering. Obese people, for example, spend a third more than fit people on health services and three-quarters more on medications, according to Rand Health. Exercise and diet are keys to avoiding high blood pressure and heart disease, which together account for average annual out-of-pocket costs of $606, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. My mom works in a pharmacy and just this morning she told me that a single insulin prescription could cost $186 or more!

So, I think its safe to say that the cost of being overweight is as much as an early death.

So where do you start with "prevention"?

Since 67% of Americans are overweight and 30% of them are obese, I'd say weight loss is a need for the majority. I recently read a study where medication costs were cut in half for people who lost an average of 33 lbs.

There's no shortage of options when it comes to weight-loss programs. The key is finding a program that fits your lifestyle and budget.

Let's look at a few that are popular today.

Suddenly Slim! Xtreme

Average weight loss: 10 lbs in 10 days – up to 30 lbs in 1 month.
Cost of losing 30 pounds: $109.95 + shipping ~ $3.67 per day; menu items are everyday things you purchase in your local grocery store already. Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back.

Jenny Craig

Average weight loss: 1 to 2 pounds per week
Cost of losing 30 pounds: $399 or $359 (if paid upfront), Then, there's the cost of food. The prepackaged foods generally cost $12 to $18 per day, or $84 to $126 per week.

NutriSystem

Average weight loss:1 to 3 pounds per week
Cost of losing 30 pounds: $1,199.80, including all food, except fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy. week It's cheaper to sign up for the Auto-Delivery Savings program (the food keeps coming until you cancel it), which costs $299.95, including shipping, per month.

Weight Watchers

Average weight loss: 1 to 2 pounds per week
Cost of losing 30 pounds: Registration is between $15 and $20, depending on location. Weekly meeting fees range from about $10 to $15, again, location-dependent. The standard monthly plan for Weight Watchers Online costs $46.90 the first month and $16.95 for subsequent months. $214.80 to $299.80, depending on location, or $97.75 online, not including food.

The Zone Diet

Average weight loss: 8 to10 pounds per month.
Cost of losing 30 pounds: The 30-day "Chef Selected" plan will cost $39.99 a day plus a shipping charge of $3 for customers in most cities & $10 for those in other areas. Two weeks costs $44.99 per day plus shipping. $3,869 to $5,159, which includes $3 a day for delivery.

Healing Power of the Amazon Rainforest...

. . . the earth's greatest living natural pharmacy Zavita, a legendary plant recipe comprised of seven of the world's most powerful healing botanicals, is known among the Amazon's indigenous peoples and tribal healers as "Elixa-da-Vida"—the "Elixir of Life"

On the April 13 Product Training Call, Chairman Lee Causey and Dr. Pete Coon, of our medical advisory board, discussed the the life-changing benefits of Zavita.

Chairman Lee Causey cited the more than 350 scientific studies that support the health benefits in the indigenous plants contained in Zavita. These Ingredients are backed by over 20 years of published research, more than 50 clinical trials on humans, more than 200 laboratory studies evaluating the biological activities of each extract, and more than 100 ethnomedical reports documenting the use of the Amazon Rainforest botanicals in Zavita by traditional tribal healers and natural medicine practitioners

Lee explained that although cells continue to renew themselves, because we are bombarded with free radicals, the cell duplication process is stifled and our bodies begin degeneration, and that Zavita feeds the cells with proper nutrients to regenerate and help us maintain vitality and strength as we age.

Dr. Pete Coon is a health and wellness expert and medical and veterinary forensic pathologist, a professor of medical and veterinary forensic pathology and infectious diseases, a published author, and one of the most informative lecturers in the area of health, wellness and preventative medicine.

Dr. Coon explained that more and more people are turning to alternatives and botanicals for healing. He went on to say that the 8 botanicals in Zavita have been in the business of healing for millions of years serving as anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-stress agents.

"Zavita can change a person's mental, physical and emotional well being. It can help all the systems of the body work together in synergy. Nothing on the market comes close to Zavita. It is one of greatest preventative tonics we can take to boost the immune system and the healing process." Dr. Pete Coon

Q & A with Dr. Oz

I know it's been a while and I promise to update you all on the amazing happenings soon, but today I want to share a post with you from a Q&A with Dr. Oz. If this sounds even vaguely familiar for you, or describes someone you know, let's talk and find your\their joy!!

Q. ... I'm 5'1", 200 pounds, and eating is my only pleasure. I have bipolar disorder, fibromyalgia, diabetes, and high blood pressure. I am so unhappy with me. What can I do? -- Carmen, via e-mail

A. What struck us first about your letter was the phrase "eating is my only pleasure," so we're going to help you tackle that first. Some people will tell you that you can't squash your problems with chocolate or a bag of chips, but your brain chemistry would beg to differ. The only problem food really solves is hunger, but it does bring us pleasure. Eating sugary foods or carbohydrates helps us score the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine. They boost your mood and make you forget for a moment that you're stressed, bored, angry, sad, or in pain. But of course, the second you're finished, the pain returns, and you need sugar again . . . causing a long-term problem from a very short-term gain.

But there are other more healthful foods that can turn on that "natural Prozac" faucet in your brain. Eating a couple of slices of low-fat turkey can ramp up serotonin levels because it contains the raw material -- tryptophan -- that your body uses to make it; it's also a protein that contains the amino acids your body uses to keep your dopamine levels healthy. But we're willing to bet that you actually get very little pleasure from food because you don't take the time to savor it. If you must have a candy bar, choose healthier dark chocolate, and make eating it last a good 10 minutes, during which you pay attention to the flavor and the pleasure you feel. Today, sit down and write a list of other things that make you feel good, from talking to friends to flying a kite, and whip it out whenever you have the urge to eat your way out of your problems. Time to learn that pleasure comes in many forms. That may solve one of your problems for a longer term.
